I first met Joel Lerner shortly after I joined APLD in 1992. He was one of the founders of the organization.

Joel's resume is impressive. He has published 7 critically acclaimed books, writes a weekly column for The Washington Post, and has made a number of television appearances. And for five years he had his own radio show. For years, Joel and his wife Sandy ran their own trade show called Leaving No Stone Unturned. They both have a lot of experience putting programs together and marketing them.

Environmental Design is a firm specializing in landscape consulting and design. Catering to residential and commercial clientele for 35 years, Joel is the creator of LERNSCAPING, a unique system of design that matches personalities to properties.

A past president and board member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, Joel is also a Certified Professional Landscape Designer. In addition to his books, he has written numerous articles and columns for professional and homeowner publications. As a member of the Garden Writers Association, his articles and designs have been published in Landscape Architecture, American Nurseryman, Better Homes and Gardens, Garden Design, Architectural Designs, Gardens, Early American Life and People, Places & Plants Magazine.

He is chair of the USDA Graduate School Advisory Committee on Horticulture and Landscape Design, received its 2001 Faculty Excellence Award and 1994 USDA Director's award, held an appointment to American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment, was profiled in Landscape Design, named Designer of the Month in Home Mechanix and has judged national awards programs. He teaches seminars on landscape design and marketing and has lectured for many well-respected institutions and professional associations.

Greg Pierceall

Greg Pierceall, a past recipient of APLD's Award of Distinction (2003) is not only a professional educator, but he also has real world experience. I've known him for 15 years and used to visit his classroom at Purdue to talk to his class. He just left Purdue to start a Horticulture Degree Completion Program at the University of Illinois. He has good understanding of how people learn and I know I can learn a lot from him.

Greg has 6 books to his credit as well, including Residential Landscapes, a textbook on landscape design. Greg is a landscape architect who has 32 years of experience with environmental education and landscape design in Illinois, Indiana and North Carolina. He recently joined the University of Illinois following 28 years as a landscape architecture professor at Purdue University. Prior to that, he taught at North Carolina State University.
