This large, four-acre property is located in an upscale, semi-rural community. The character of the neighborhood, though similar to many newer subdivisions, is more grand and more open than most. Formerly farmland, there are few large trees.
Although the owners travel a lot, both have a strong interest in the garden. She loves color and enjoys a little gardening. He likes to cut the lawn. Yes, he has a tractor, and one of the design criteria was to make sure he could navigate his big John Deere around the yard.
There were a number of existing trees on the property when we arrived. We moved a couple and added a total of 30, many with a tree spade. With a property of this size, scale is very important, so we went with mostly 6-8 inch shade trees, including an 8 1/2 inch caliper Ginkgo. Evergreens ranged from 10-15 feet.
The many perennials (3980 plants) were chosen for low maintenance and long season of interest. Perennials were planted in masses to provide impact from a distance.
Integrating the property with the surrounding landscape was accomplished by retaining certain vistas and even framing them. Transition from one large lawn area to the next is seamless.
Winner of a 2001 Award from the Perennial Plant Association.
